Ons Gaan Nou Braai
Heritage Day in South Africa will be taking place on the 24th of September, also known as National Braai Day. On this day, South Africa is encouraged to come together and celebrate the roots of our vibrant, rich, and extremely diverse culture. South Africa is also referred to as the “Rainbow Nation” due to the diversity and colour of its people – another incremental reason as to why Heritage Day exists. The aim of this day is to embrace and nurture our unique culture, accepting all races and genders. This is typically done by channelling the inner South African within us and enjoying a braai with friends and family!
This day was previously referred to as Shaka Day, celebrating Shake the Zulu King, who was known for uniting the Zulu clan together and forming the Zulu nation. The bill was first objected however a compromise was reached when it was decided to create a day where all South Africans could observe and celebrate their diverse cultural heritage.
In 1996 former President Nelson Mandela stated in an address marking Heritage Day:
“When our first democratically-elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation.”
A couple of years later it was advocated to make this day National Braai Day. An initiative by Braai4Heritage called upon South Africans to celebrate their common roots by having a braai (barbecue) on Heritage Day. Sharing conversation, laughs and a meal among friends and family is a way for South Africans to connect and come together. Since then, our country has been celebrating this day through sharing a meal (specifically a braai) helping to strive towards a future where we are all united under one nation.
